Romantic comedy movies to watch while planning your wedding

As an author of over fifty women’s fiction and romance books, I have a good idea about what it takes to live happily ever after. True love is what dreams are made of for many people. What love story is complete without a fairytale wedding?

My latest book, The Wedding Season, tells the story of Mariella Jacob, an embattled bridal gown designer who suffered a PR nightmare after confronting the client having an affair with Mariella’s fiance. It’s not a fairytale, but Mariella finds her perfect man with the client she never expected.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

But planning your wedding is a serious matter. For over 20 years, I have been married to the man of my dreams. I remember the excitement, stress, and effort that went into making our wedding day perfect.

Sometimes, the best way to relax is to laugh a little. There are plenty of rom-coms with wedding themes to choose from. Here are some of my favorites:

The Proposal

Betty White dances with Sandra Bullock around a bonfire in the forest. Any scene involving Betty White will be pure gold. Sandra Bullock is a publishing executive in need of a visa extension to avoid being deported. She turns to Ryan Reynolds, her patient assistant. They have a cute chemistry. The two discover their real feelings when they pretend to be engaged and visit his family on a rural Alaskan road (a trope that I love). The movie is full of laughs and some tender moments.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

This is one of the best wedding movies I have ever seen. Nia Vardalos is the daughter of an old-fashioned Greek family who, at 30, falls in love with her non-Greek boyfriend (John Corbett). This is a cute movie that focuses on respecting cultural differences while also embracing them. It’s a sweet story with themes of respecting cultural traditions, embracing differences and not making judgments.

Sweet Home Alabama

Reese Witherspoon’s classic movie in which she plays a fashion designer who has a handsome boyfriend from the big city (Patrick Dempsey). She has a past from a small town that she must deal with…but she does not expect the guy who left her behind to still hold onto her heart.

It’s worth it to see the early scene in which Patrick Dempsey’s Tiffany’s character proposes. Big-time swoon. Just as sweet are scenes where Reese’s character returns home and learns to appreciate the charm of her old friends and parents. (Plus, her former hottie flame). It’s a good reminder that it’s OK to be yourself, even if you’re trying to be someone else. To value those (like our future spouses) who love us that way.

Bridesmaids & Wedding Crashers

They are both inappropriate movies that make you laugh out loud. You’re laughing so hard, saying, “Oh no, they didn’t just say this,” while spitting LaCroix from your nose. If you’re feeling stressed or having a bad day, play one of these videos for guaranteed fun. In some ways, they are a guide on what to avoid when planning a marriage. A cameo from Wilson Phillips would be a great addition to any wedding ceremony.
